Clean minor skin burns with hydrogen peroxide. Apply vitamin E topically to promote healing. Aloe vera, milk, apple cider vinegar, lemon water, potato, cucumber, lavender, baking soda, tea and oatmeal all make good compresses which cool skin burns.

Never use butter or margarine on a burn. It holds the heat in burned skin tissue and helps to breed bacteria that can cause an infection.

Over the counter antibiotics that are good for skin burns contain the active ingredients polymyxin B sulfate or bacitracin.
