Ionizing Radiation & Skin Burns: Protection and Risks
The type of radiation that may be stopped by protective clothing and a mask but can still damage skin and produce burns similar to thermal burns is ionizing radiation. This includes X-rays, gamma rays, and high-energy particle radiation such as alpha and beta particles. While protective clothing and masks can shield against some radiation, these high-energy forms can penetrate through barriers and interact with biological tissues, causing cellular damage and even skin burns. Exposure to ionizing radiation without proper shielding can have serious health effects, including acute radiation syndrome, skin damage, and even long-term complications such as radiation-induced cancers.Burns - Related Articles
