- No growth of bacteria or fungi, or

- Growth of normal flora (common and harmless bacteria often found in the airways like viridans streptococci, coagulase-negative staphylococci, aerobic gram-positive rods (diphtheroids), oropharyngeal flora such as gram-positive cocci in small numbers, etc.) that can be present without causing infection or disease.
