Understanding Sensory Pathways of the Spinal Cord: A Comprehensive Guide
Ascending (sensory) tracts:
- Posterior column-medial lemniscus pathway: This pathway carries fine touch, conscious proprioception, and two-point discrimination from the skin and muscles of the body. It consists of the fasciculus gracilis and fasciculus cuneatus.
- Spinothalamic pathway: This pathway carries pain, temperature, crude touch, and tickle sensations from the skin. It consists of the lateral spinothalamic tract and anterior spinothalamic tract.
- Dorsal column pathway: This pathway carries fine touch, two-point discrimination, vibration sense, and conscious proprioception from the skin, joints, and muscles. It consists of the fasciculus gracilis and the fasciculus cuneatus.
- Trigeminothalamic pathway: Carries sensory information from the face to the thalamus.
