Brain Death and Heart Rate: Understanding Prognosis and Medical Definitions
If a person is brain dead, it means that all brain functions have permanently and irreversibly ceased. In this condition, the person is considered legally and medically dead, even though their heart may continue to beat for a short while due to artificial support. The spontaneous return of brain function is considered highly improbable, and medical professionals generally pronounce the person deceased based on the criteria for brain death. Therefore, the survival or long-term maintenance of life in a brain-dead individual is not plausible.
