What are the parts of a nerve cell?
Parts of a Nerve Cell
* Cell body (soma): The cell body is the main part of the nerve cell and contains the nucleus, mitochondria, and other organelles.
* Dendrites: Dendrites are short, branching extensions of the cell body that receive signals from other nerve cells.
* Axon: The axon is a long, slender extension of the cell body that transmits signals to other nerve cells.
* Myelin sheath: The myelin sheath is a fatty substance that insulates the axon and helps speed up the transmission of signals.
* Nodes of Ranvier: Nodes of Ranvier are small gaps in the myelin sheath where the axon is exposed. These gaps allow signals to jump from one node to the next, which further speeds up the transmission of signals.
* Synapse: A synapse is the junction between two nerve cells where signals are transmitted.
