Autonomic nervous system
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a division of the peripheral nervous system that innervates involuntary smooth muscle and glands, and thus controls a wide range of bodily functions such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, pupil dilation, and urination.
The ANS is composed of three systems:
**- the sympathetic nervous system,
- the parasympathetic nervous system,
- and the enteric nervous system.**
The sympathetic nervous system is activated in response to stressful situations and prepares the body for "fight or flight." It increases heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration, and inhibits digestion and urination.
The parasympathetic nervous system is activated in response to restful situations and promotes "rest and digest." It decreases heart rate and blood pressure, and stimulates digestion and urination.
The enteric nervous system controls the gastrointestinal tract and is responsible for regulating its motility, secretions, and digestion.
