Understanding Scoliosis: Causes, Symptoms & Management
Scoliosis is an unnatural curvature of the spine that may be caused by a degenerative joint condition. The actual cause of scoliosis is unknown. It runs in families, and if it is not detected or treated in childhood, the severity of the spine curvature will increase in adulthood.-
Prevention
-
Since the cause of scoliosis is unknown, there is no prevention of the condition. If scoliosis is detected early enough, it can be managed and controlled.
Symptoms
-
Symptoms of scoliosis include uneven hips, waist or shoulders. Leaning to one side, fatigue or having one prominent shoulder blade are also symptoms.
Checkups
-
Growing children should have the curvature of their spine checked at least twice a year.
Braces
-
Braces are often used on children who have the condition. Braces will not cure scoliosis, but they can prevent further curvature of the spine.
Surgery
-
Surgery can be done to prevent further curvature of the spine. Typically, this is to fuse the vertebra along the curve.
