Knee Immobilizer: Proper Use & Post-Surgery Care
Physicians recommend knee immobilizers to patients with certain knee injuries. Sometimes they also recommend them post-operatively. Knee immoblizers hold the knee immobile to allow healing and prevent further injury. Your physician should fit you because wearing a knee immobilizer of the wrong size can be uncomfortable and it may not do the job intended. Ask your physician when you should wear your knee immobilizer and when you can remove it.
Instructions
Position your knee immobilizer against your knee with the metal stays against the back of your leg. Hold it in place with one hand.
Pull the sides of your knee immobilizer closed, keeping the patella notch centered over your knee cap. The patella notch is the small cut out section that looks like your knee cap should fit right into it.
Buckle the straps of your knee immobilizer above and below your knee. Alternate buckling one strap above and one below until all are buckled. Your knee immobilizer should fit snugly but should not be uncomfortably tight.
