Wrist Cramps: Causes, Relief & Prevention - A Comprehensive Guide
A "charley horse" commonly refers to a leg muscle spasm or cramp. It also can refer, however, to a spasm in other parts of the body, such as the wrist. This involuntary muscle contraction can be very painful, but can be treated and prevented.-
Causes
-
The two main causes of muscle spasms are overuse and/or injury of the muscle, or dehydration. Because the muscles of the wrist are used heavily in some activities, such as typing or sewing, performing these tasks for long periods could lead to muscle spasms. Spasms of many muscles also can be brought on by dehydration.
Treatment
-
With the onset of a muscle cramp, stop your current activity and slowly massage the area. Carefully move the hand in the opposite direction to the cramp.
Prevention
-
Remain hydrated by drinking water frequently. You can prevent wrist muscle cramps by alternating tasks that rely heavily on the hands and wrist with other activities. Be sure also to take frequent short breaks during long periods of activity.
