How do you tell the difference between dense regular connective tissue and smooth muscle when looking at slides?
Dense regular connective tissue:
* Bundles of collagen fibers running in the same direction
* Often has a wavy appearance
* Nuclei are spindle-shaped and located between the collagen fibers
Smooth muscle:
* Bundles of smooth muscle cells running in the same direction
* Cells are elongated and have a centrally located nucleus
* The cytoplasm of smooth muscle cells contains myofilaments, which are responsible for contraction
