How do you discontinue an iv?
1. Wash your hands.2. Turn off the infusion pump, if present.
3. Clamp the IV tubing close to the insertion site.
4. Remove the tape securing the needle or catheter into the port or skin of the patient. Remove needle/catheter from vein/port. Discard according to facility policy for sharps safety. Clean IV port according to protocol for your healthcare environment, with saline or sterile gauze pads (not alcohol).
5. Apply pressure of dressing to the insertion site (may use IV tubing segment of approximately 3 inches long over insertion site, tape in place for adult/older adolescents for approximately 5 - 10 minutes.
