Post-Blood Donation: What to Avoid for Optimal Recovery
Activities to avoid immediately after donating blood
* Avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting for at least 12 hours. This can cause your blood pressure to drop, which may lead to dizziness or fainting.
* Don't smoke for at least 30 minutes. Smoking can damage the blood vessels and interfere with the healing process.
* Avoid drinking alcohol for at least 4 hours. Alcohol can thin the blood and increase the risk of bleeding.
* Don't take a hot bath or shower for at least 4 hours. This can cause your blood pressure to drop, which may lead to dizziness or fainting.
* Avoid driving for at least 24 hours if you feel dizzy or lightheaded. This can increase the risk of an accident.
Activities to avoid for the next few days
* Don't do any activities that put strain on your arm where you donated blood. This includes lifting heavy objects, playing sports, or reaching overhead.
* Avoid swimming for at least 24 hours. This can increase the risk of infection.
* Avoid taking any medications that can thin the blood. This includes aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen.
If you experience any of the following symptoms, contact your doctor immediately:
* Dizziness or fainting
* Lightheadedness
* Nausea or vomiting
