Understanding Blood Vessels and Blood Cells: Types & Functions
Types of Blood Vessels:
1. Arteries: Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the rest of the body.
2. Veins: Carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart from the rest of the body.
3. Capillaries: The smallest blood vessels, where exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide occurs between the blood and the tissues.
Types of Blood Cells:
1. Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes): Contain hemoglobin, which carries oxygen from the lungs to the tissues.
2. White Blood Cells (Leukocytes): Protect the body against infection and disease. There are several types of white blood cells, including neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils.
3. Platelets (Thrombocytes): Help stop bleeding by forming clots at the site of injury.
4. Plasma: The liquid component of blood that carries blood cells, proteins, hormones, nutrients, and waste products.
