Understanding Venous Circulation: 3 Key Factors for Healthy Blood Flow
Three things that help push blood through veins are:
1. Skeletal muscle pump: The contraction and relaxation of skeletal muscles squeezes veins and helps push blood towards the heart. This is especially important in the lower extremities, where blood must flow against gravity to return to the heart.
2. Respiratory pump: The changes in pressure in the chest during breathing help to pull blood through veins. When we inhale, the pressure in the chest decreases, which helps to pull blood into the heart from the veins. When we exhale, the pressure in the chest increases, which helps to push blood out of the heart and into the arteries.
3. Venoconstriction: The constriction of veins helps to increase the pressure inside the veins, which helps to push blood towards the heart. This is controlled by the autonomic nervous system.
