Diagnosing Venous Insufficiency: Symptoms & Tests
Venous insufficiency is usually diagnosed based on a person's symptoms and a physical examination.
Additional tests may include:
- Venous duplex ultrasound: A painless procedure that uses sound waves to create images of the veins. This test can show the location and extent of the venous insufficiency, as well as the direction of blood flow.
- Plethysmography: A test that measures the amount of blood flowing through a vein. This test can help determine how well the veins are functioning.
- Magnetic resonance venography (MRV): A noninvasive imaging test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the veins.
- Computed tomography venography (CTV): A minimally invasive imaging test that combines X-rays and computer technology to produce detailed images of the veins.
