Understanding Blood Types: A Comprehensive Guide to A, B, AB, and O
The four main blood groups are determined by the presence or absence of two antigens, A and B, on the surface of red blood cells.
- Blood group A has the A antigen.
- Blood group B has the B antigen.
- Blood group AB has both the A and B antigens.
- Blood group O lacks both the A and B antigens.
To determine your blood type, a blood test is performed. A small sample of blood is taken from a vein in your arm and tested to see which antigens are present on your red blood cells. The results of the test will tell you which blood group you belong to.
Knowing your blood type is important for several reasons, including:
- Blood transfusions
- Organ transplantation
- Determining paternity
- Identifying victims of accidents or crimes
