Chickenpox Vaccine: Usage, Dosage & Administration - A Comprehensive Guide
Vaccination- The chickenpox (varicella) vaccine is available alone, or in combination with other vaccines.
- The vaccine contains a weakened strain of the varicella-zoster virus, the virus that causes chickenpox and shingles.
- The vaccine is given by shot into the upper arm
- Two doses are recommended for children, adolescents and adults.
Dosage and Administration:
- Children ≥12 months and adolescents: Two 0.5-mL doses are recommended.
- Adults: Two 0.5-mL doses are recommended.
Dosing Interval:
- The second dose should be administered 4 to 8 weeks after the first.
- The second dose should be given within 36 months after the first for a person with known exposure to chickenpox.
