Combat Hunching: Effective Exercises & Posture Correction

Poor posture such as hunching over or slouching is the number one reason for back pain. As kids we were always told to sit up straight. It is a common problem and one that is difficult to fix. Poor posture can trigger a long list of spinal problems including arthritis.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit and stand tall. Sit up and reach the top of your head toward the ceiling. Try to stand and sit as straight as possible. When poor posture has been a habit this may be difficult and requires discipline.

    • 2

Wear comfortable shoes. High heels although fashionable can cause poor posture and put too much strain on your back. Flat shoes with good support are best.

    • 3

Avoid backpacks and bags that are too heavy. Carrying these things will pull your spine out of alignment. Either lighten the load or invest in a bag that has wheels for you to pull.

    • 4

Take a yoga or pilate's class. These two exercise routines are great for teaching the principles of good posture. After practicing yoga or pilates over a period, your spine can be retrained to assume a good posture.

    • 5

Seek physical therapy to reduce pain and correct poor posture with a series of isolated exercises.
