Back Pain & Heart Palpitations: What's the Connection?
A pinched nerve in the back, also known as a spinal nerve root impingement, typically does not directly cause heart palpitations. Heart palpitations, which are sensations of a rapid or irregular heartbeat, usually originate from issues related to the heart's electrical system or surrounding structures.
However, it's worth noting that in some cases, severe and persistent compression of spinal nerve roots in the thoracic (chest) region can potentially affect the autonomic nervous system, which has branches that regulate heart function. In very rare instances, this may contribute to symptoms such as an abnormal heart rate or rhythm. This effect on the autonomic nervous system is more likely to occur with ongoing and unrelieved nerve compression in the thoracic spine.
If you are experiencing heart palpitations along with back pain, discomfort, or any new changes in your heart rate or rhythm, it's important to seek medical attention from a healthcare professional. They can properly evaluate your symptoms, check for other potential causes, and provide the appropriate treatment.
