Definition of Proventil MDI
A Proventil MDI, now called Proventil HFA MDI, is a release mechanism containing a prescription medication used to treat and prevent airway spasms or bronchospasms. The generic drug, albuterol sulfate, is sold under the brand names of Proventil HFA and Ventolin HFA.-
Significance

Proventil is used in the management of exercise induced asthma. Proventil is a beta agonist drug that stimulates the beta receptors in the airway, causing the bronchial muscles to relax and open the airway, allowing more air to get into the lungs.

MDIs are used to manage and treat respiratory disorders. A metered dose inhaler (MDI) s a device which holds a canister containing medication that when actuated, directs a fine mist generated from the canister, through the device, into the patients' lungs. MDIs are designed for actuation while the individual is taking a slow, deep breath.
Process

MDI releases and propels the medication into the lungs. The process of releasing the medication and propelling it into the lungs is accomplished by using a hydrofloroalkanes (HFA) propellant in the canister. Upon actuation, the canister is pressed down releasing a measured dose of medication.
