Asthma Care Goals: Achieving Optimal Control & Quality of Life

The goal of care for an asthma patient is to achieve and maintain good asthma control.

This means that the patient should be able to:

- Be free of asthma symptoms most of the time

- Have normal or near-normal lung function

- Be able to participate in all activities without limitation

- Have minimal or no need for rescue medication

- Have no or minimal exacerbations requiring oral steroids or hospitalization

- Have a good quality of life

To achieve these goals, the patient may need to take regular medication, including inhaled corticosteroids, long-acting beta-agonists, and leukotriene modifiers. They may also need to make some lifestyle changes, such as avoiding triggers, exercising regularly, and eating a healthy diet.
