Thumb Arthritis: Home Treatments & Exercises for Pain Relief
If you have tried to button your shirt or hold a mug without the use of your thumb, you know how important this finger is. With arthritis, the thumb can become stiff, lose function and be painful. But there are simple at-home exercises and treatments to keep it functioning properly.-
Thumb Circles
-
Do thumb circles several times a day to keep good range of movement. Make a gentle fist with the thumb free, then slowly circle the thumb clockwise and counterclockwise for one to two minutes.
Squeeze a Ball
-
Squeeze a soft ball (deflated children's ball or a soft rubber ball). Practice using all fingers to squeeze, then indent the ball gently with thumbs for 20 to 30 seconds.
Heat or Cold Therapy
-
For burning pain, apply ice to reduce inflammation; freeze water in a small cup and do an ice massage. For chronic dull aches, apply a warm towel or dip the thumb into a warm bath with Epsom salts.
Paraffin Hot Wax
-
Try a paraffin wax dip for the thumb and hands; you will need a paraffin spa. The hot wax transfers the heat into the bone and improves circulation.
Thumb Splints
-
Wear a thumb splint to make it easier to grip objects without pain. This is particularly helpful if you must do repetitive motions like pinching.
