History of Anorexia Nervosa: Discovery and Early Understanding

The first recorded case of what we can term "anorexia nervosa" was identified by Richard Morton in his dissertation published in 1689 with the title Phthisiologia or a treatise of consumptions. While Dr. Morton was describing "nervous consumption," this disease became more commonly known for a long time as simply hysteria or "maiden's sickness."
