An estimated 10 million American females and more than 1 million males will develop an eating disorder at some time during their lives. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness. Anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate among all psychiatric disorders, with 5% to 10% of those afflicted eventually dying from their illness.
