What is a pulmonary aneurysm?
A pulmonary aneurysm is a weakened or bulging area in the wall of an artery in the lungs. It is similar to an aneurysm in other parts of the body, such as the aorta, but happens specifically in the arteries of the lungs.
When an aneurysm develops in the lung arteries, it creates a balloon-like formation, causing the wall of the artery to expand excessively. As this occurs, there's a higher risk of complications resulting from increased pressure, abnormal blood flow, or potential rupture of the weakened blood vessel.
Pulmonary aneurysms can happen in various locations within the pulmonary arteries and might develop over time due to different underlying medical conditions affecting the lung arteries. Diagnosing the root cause and receiving proper treatment for pulmonary aneurysms is crucial since certain instances can become life-threatening. If it does burst a person will suffer intense internal bleeding leading to death usually. Symptoms include, sudden, excruciating chest pain. Immediate medical treatment is always required.
