Untreated STDs & Neurological Issues: Understanding Syphilis & HIV-Associated Disorders
Neurosyphilis
Neurosyphilis is a rare complication of syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection (STI). It occurs when the bacteria that cause syphilis (Treponema pallidum) spread to the brain and spinal cord. Neurosyphilis can cause a wide range of neurological problems, including dementia, psychosis, and other changes in personality and behavior.
HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND)
HAND is a group of neurological conditions that can occur in people with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. HAND can cause a variety of symptoms, including dementia, psychosis, and other changes in thinking, memory, and behavior.
Other STDs
Other STDs, such as herpes simplex virus (HSV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), can also cause neurological problems, including dementia and psychosis, in some people. However, these cases are rare.
