Fungi and Disease: Understanding Malaria, Sleeping Sickness & Amoebic Dysentery
Fungi don't cause malaria, African sleeping sickness, or amoebic dysentery.
- Malaria: is caused by a type of protozoan called Plasmodium.
- African sleeping sickness: is caused by a type of protozoan called Trypanosoma brucei.
- Amoebic dysentery: is caused by a type of protozoan called Entamoeba histolytica.
Fungi are different from protozoans, they form a separate kingdom of organisms. While some fungi can cause infections in humans, they are not responsible for the three diseases mentioned above.
