Common Animal Allergens: Understanding Cat & Pet Allergies

Allergies are caused when the body's immunity thinks an invader is trying to do damage. This can then set off a series of symptoms that can range in severity. Allergies are caused from foods, medications and environmental pollutants. When it comes to animal allergies, the allergy is caused from the dander and dust that they collect on their fur. There are several animals that can cause allergies.

Cats

• For the most part, cats are fluffy and carry allergens. This makes a cat a common allergy-causing animal.

Dogs

• Dogs also usually have a great deal of fur. They also tend to shed, which can exacerbate allergic symptoms.

Rodents

• Various small animals can cause allergies. Some of these include guinea pigs, gerbils and mice.

Birds

• Various birds can cause allergies. Some of these include chickens, turkeys and ducks.

Farm Animals

• There are a lot of large animals that can cause allergies. Some of these include horses, mules and goats.
