Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome (SSSS): Symptoms, Causes & Treatment
The agent that causes delayed blisters and dry cough is Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS), also known as Ritter's disease. It is a rare bacterial skin infection caused by the exfoliative toxins produced by certain strains of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
Symptoms of SSSS include:
- Widespread blistering and peeling of the skin, typically starting on the face and spreading to the rest of the body
- Fever
- Irritability
- Lethargy
- Loss of appetite
- Dry cough
SSSS is typically treated with antibiotics and supportive care, such as pain medication and fluids. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary.
