Understanding ADHD in Children: Behavior and Treatment

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often occurs along with behavioral problems, which may range from mild to severe. According the National Library of Medicine, ADHD affects approximately 3 to 5 percent of all children. Physicians typically recommend treating ADHD with a combination of prescription medications and therapy. However, in many cases medication serves as the only treatment.

Effects

• ADHD symptoms often affect a child's behavior in adverse ways. Some symptoms that may cause behavioral problems include: failure to listen when spoken to, inability to follow through with assigned tasks, organizational problems, easily distracted and forgetful, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

Types

• Most children with ADHD experience some problems with behavior. However, some may also be diagnosed with oppositional defiance disorder (ODD) or conduct disorder. Children with these conditions will likely require behavioral therapy, and their parents may benefit from counseling.

Function

• The function of misbehavior in ADHD children usually relates to either attention-seeking or avoidance of tasks. Children with ADHD may seek attention negatively by breaking rules intentionally. Also, they may misbehave so that caregivers will let them skip tasks, such as household chores or homework.

Considerations

• Caregivers should clearly explain consequences that will occur should a child misbehave. Appropriate consequences include time-outs, or taking away TV and video game privileges. Also, parents should make eye contact with children when discussing appropriate and inappropriate behaviors.

Prevention/Solution

• To prevent some occurrences of misbehavior, remember to frequently praise and reward appropriate behaviors. Be sure to always make expectations as clear as possible. Also, avoid arguing with children.
