Obtaining Icteric Samples for Validation Testing: A Guide

Icteric samples contain bilirubin, which can interfere with the accuracy of certain laboratory tests. Validation testing is necessary to ensure that the tests are still accurate in the presence of bilirubin.

There are a few ways to obtain icteric samples for validation testing:

- Collect blood samples from jaundiced individuals. Jaundice is a condition that causes the skin and whites of the eyes to turn yellow. It is often caused by high levels of bilirubin in the blood.

- Add bilirubin to normal blood samples. This can be done by adding bilirubin powder or a bilirubin solution to the blood sample.

- Use synthetic icteric samples. These samples are made from chemicals that mimic the composition of icteric blood.

Once you have obtained icteric samples, you can use them to perform validation testing.

- You can compare the results of the validation tests performed on the icteric samples to the results obtained from non-icteric samples.

- If the results are comparable, then the tests have passed the validation test and can be used for clinical purposes.
