X-rays for Stomach Problems: What They Can and Can't Detect
While an X-ray can be a valuable tool in detecting certain stomach problems, it has its limitations. Plain abdominal X-rays may show signs of obstructions, blockages, or the presence of foreign objects in the stomach. They can also reveal certain abnormalities in the stomach's shape, size, and position.
However, X-rays have limited sensitivity in detecting soft tissue abnormalities, making them less effective in detecting many common stomach conditions. For example, X-rays may not be useful in diagnosing gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining), ulcers, or stomach tumors.
In such cases, other imaging techniques or diagnostic tests may be necessary for accurate diagnosis. These could include upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy, computed tomography (CT) scans, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.
