Prostate Cancer: Key Areas of Impact & Spread
The parts of the body most affected by prostate cancer are:
1. Prostate gland: The prostate gland is a small gland located in men between the bladder and the rectum. It produces seminal fluid, which is a component of semen. Prostate cancer begins in the cells of the prostate gland.
2. Lymph nodes: Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped organs that are part of the lymphatic system. They help filter out bacteria and other harmful substances from the body. Prostate cancer can spread to the lymph nodes in the pelvis and abdomen.
3. Bones: Prostate cancer can also spread to the bones, particularly the spine, pelvis, and ribs. This is known as bone metastasis. Bone metastasis can cause pain, weakness, and fractures.
4. Other organs: In advanced stages, prostate cancer can spread to other organs such as the lungs, liver, and brain. This is known as distant metastasis and is relatively rare.
