Understanding Cancer Remission and Recurrence: What You Need to Know
Definition of Remission
Remission in the context of cancer refers to a state in which the signs and symptoms of the disease are minimal or undetectable. It does not necessarily mean that the cancer is completely eradicated from the body, but rather that it is currently under control.
Relationship to Recurrence
- Complete remission: This indicates that all detectable traces of cancer have disappeared from the body after treatment. However, it is still possible for the cancer to return (recur) at a later time.
- Partial remission: This indicates that the cancer has shrunk or decreased in size, but there are still some remaining traces of the disease in the body. Similarly to complete remission, there is a risk of the cancer recurring in the future.
