Understanding Lung Cancer Types: NSCLC & SCLC
There are two main types of lung cancer, both of which start in the cells that line the lungs:
1) Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC): This is the most common type of lung cancer, accounting for about 85% of all cases. NSCLC is further classified into several subtypes based on the appearance of the cancer cells under a microscope:
- Adenocarcinoma
- Squamous cell carcinoma
- Large cell carcinoma
- Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma
2) Small cell lung cancer (SCLC): This type of lung cancer is less common, accounting for about 10%-15% of all cases. SCLC is characterized by small, round cells that grow and spread quickly. It is often diagnosed at an advanced stage.
In addition to these two main types, there are also some less common types of lung cancer, including:
- Mesothelioma: This type of cancer starts in the cells that line the outer surface of the lungs (the pleura). It is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers.
- Lymphoma: This type of cancer starts in the lymph nodes in the chest.
- Sarcoma: This type of cancer starts in the connective tissue of the lungs.
Each type of lung cancer has its own unique characteristics, risk factors, and treatment options. It is important to see a doctor if you have any symptoms that could be a sign of lung cancer, such as a persistent cough, shortness of breath, or chest pain.
