Understanding the Liver Systems: Portal, Arterial, Vein & Biliary Systems
Hepatic Portal System: This system is responsible for transporting nutrient-rich blood from the intestines and spleen to the liver for processing.
Hepatic Artery: The hepatic artery supplies oxygen-rich blood to the liver.
Hepatic Veins: The hepatic veins carry processed blood from the liver back to the heart.
Biliary System: The biliary system consists of the gallbladder and bile ducts. Bile produced in the liver is stored in the gallbladder and then released into the small intestine to facilitate the digestion of fats.
Sinusoids: Sinusoids are small, irregular blood vessels within the liver. They allow exchange of substances between the blood and liver cells.
Hepatocytes: Hepatocytes are the primary functional cells of the liver. They perform various metabolic functions, including detoxification of harmful substances, synthesis of proteins, and production of bile.
