Blood Supply to the Liver: Hepatic Artery & Portal Vein
The liver receives blood from two sources: the hepatic artery and the portal vein.
- The hepatic artery: supplies oxygen-rich blood to the liver from the aorta, the main artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
- The portal vein: carries blood that is rich in nutrients from the intestines and spleen to the liver. This blood contains substances that have been absorbed from the food that has been digested in the intestines, as well as waste products from the spleen.
