Lice vs. Dandruff: Identifying the Differences & Symptoms
Lice and dandruff can share some symptoms like an itchy scalp and white flakes. However, there are some key differences that can help you distinguish between the two conditions:
Symptoms:
* Itching: Lice infestations often cause intense itching, especially at the back of the head and behind the ears. Dandruff, on the other hand, causes milder itching.
* Flakes: Lice do not produce flakes, but dandruff is characterized by white or yellow flakes that can be seen on the scalp, hair, and shoulders.
* Head lice eggs: Lice lay small, oval-shaped eggs (nits) on the hair close to the scalp. They are usually white or yellowish-white in color and strongly attached to the hair shaft.
* Lice movement: Lice are small, wingless insects that can be seen crawling or moving quickly through the hair.
Treatment:
* Lice: Head lice can be treated with over-the-counter or prescription medicated shampoos or lotions that kill lice and their eggs. A second treatment is usually needed after 7-10 days to ensure all lice and nits have been eliminated.
* Dandruff: Dandruff can often be managed with over-the-counter shampoos, conditioners, or medicated treatments that contain anti-fungal or anti-dandruff ingredients. Scalp hygiene, such as washing hair regularly, can help reduce dandruff.
If you are not sure whether you have lice or dandruff, it is a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider or a dermatologist for an evaluation and appropriate treatment.
