Steven Hawking & ALS: Understanding His Communication Methods

Steven Hawking did not have Lou Gehrig's disease, he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing loss of muscle control. Hawking was able to communicate using a speech-generating device, which he controlled with his cheek.
