Understanding the Four Sections of the Colon: A Comprehensive Guide
The colon is divided into four sections: the ascending colon, the transverse colon, the descending colon, and the sigmoid colon.
- The ascending colon: This portion of the colon ascends from the cecum, which is the pouch-like structure where the small intestine meets the large intestine. The ascending colon travels up the right side of the abdomen.
- The transverse colon: The transverse colon stretches across the abdomen from the right to the left side. It is located just below the stomach and is usually the longest part of the colon.
- The descending colon: The descending colon continues from the transverse colon and travels down the left side of the abdomen.
- The sigmoid colon: The sigmoid colon is the final portion of the colon and is shaped like an "S". It connects the descending colon to the rectum and is located in the lower left quadrant of the abdomen.
