Understanding Breast Cancer: Detection, Screening, and Diagnosis
Breast cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the cells of the breast. It is the most common cancer among women, after skin cancer. Breast cancer can occur in both men and women, but it is much more common in women.
Breast cancer screening is a way to find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat. Screening tests can find breast cancer before you have any symptoms. There are two main types of breast cancer screening tests:
* Mammograms are X-rays of the breasts. They can find breast cancer even before it can be felt by a doctor or you. Mammograms are recommended for women starting at age 40.
* Clinical breast exams are exams of the breasts by a doctor or nurse. They can find breast cancer that can be felt by touch. Clinical breast exams are recommended for women starting at age 20.
Breast cancer detection is the process of finding breast cancer. This can be done through breast cancer screening tests, or through other methods, such as a biopsy. A biopsy is a procedure in which a small piece of tissue is removed from the breast and examined under a microscope. Biopsies are used to confirm a diagnosis of breast cancer.
If you have any concerns about breast cancer, talk to your doctor. Early detection and treatment can improve your chances of survival.
