Head Birthmarks & Cancer Risk: What You Need to Know
Birthmarks on the head, or anywhere on the body, do not directly cause cancer.
However, some rare types of birthmarks can be associated with an increased risk of developing certain types of cancer.
For instance, a large congenital melanocytic nevus, also known as a giant pigmented nevus, has a higher chance of developing into melanoma, a type of skin cancer.
These nevi are usually present at birth and can cover a large area of the skin. Regular monitoring by a dermatologist is recommended for individuals with giant pigmented nevi to detect any changes or signs of melanoma.
It's important to note that the vast majority of birthmarks are harmless and do not pose any health risks. If you have any concerns or notice changes in the appearance or size of a birthmark, it's always advisable to consult a dermatologist for evaluation and appropriate management.
