Shingles vs. Cold Sores: Understanding the Difference

Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chickenpox. Fever blisters, or cold sores, are caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). So shingles cannot be transmitted through fever blisters.
