Understanding Mastoid Processes: Location, Function & Anatomy

The bumps on the base of the skull on either side are the mastoid processes. They are located behind the ears and are part of the temporal bone. The mastoid processes contain air cells that help to aerate the middle ear. They also contain the mastoid sinuses, which are part of the venous system.
