The Origin of 'Grotesque': A History of Art & Meaning

The word "grotesque" comes from the Italian word "grottesca", which literally means "belonging to a grotto". The word was first used in the 16th century to describe the unusual and often bizarre decorations found in ancient Roman underground chambers, or grottoes. These decorations often featured fantastic creatures and hybrid forms, which were considered to be both strange and fascinating. Over time, the term "grotesque" came to be applied more broadly to any type of art or ornamentation that was considered to be bizarre, exaggerated, or even monstrous.
