Where did the word grotesque originate?

The word "grotesque" comes from the Italian word "grottesca", which literally means "belonging to a grotto". The word was first used in the 16th century to describe the unusual and often bizarre decorations found in ancient Roman underground chambers, or grottoes. These decorations often featured fantastic creatures and hybrid forms, which were considered to be both strange and fascinating.
