Mouth Scabs: Causes, Healing, and When to See a Professional
Oral scabs typically result from:
- Trauma: cheek/lip biting, sharp food, dental work
- Canker sores (aphthous ulcers) — scab during healing
- Oral thrush (candidiasis) — white plaques that may bleed
- Herpes simplex (cold sores) — crusting phase
- Lichen planus, pemphigoid, or other immune conditions
Healing
Most trauma/canker scabs resolve in 7–14 days. Saltwater rinses, avoiding irritants (spicy, acidic), and topical barriers (Orabase) help.
Red Flags (See Dentist/Doctor)
- Persists >2 weeks
- Recurrent, multiple, or enlarging
- Painless ulcer (rule out malignancy)
- Associated systemic symptoms
Oral mucosa heals rapidly; chronic lesions need biopsy.
