Mouth Blisters: Causes, Treatment & Healing Tips
If you develop a blister in your mouth, there are several steps you can take to manage it and speed up the healing process:
1. Avoid Irritating the Blister:
- Try not to bite or burst the blister. This can prolong healing and increase the risk of infection.
2. Keep Mouth Clean:
- Maintain a good oral hygiene routine by gently brushing your teeth and tongue twice a day. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day to cleanse it.
3. Over-the-Counter Medications:
- To relieve pain and inflammation, you can take over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil).
4. Cold Compress:
- Applying a cold compress or an ice cube wrapped in cloth directly to the blister can help reduce swelling. Do this for short intervals of 10-15 minutes several times a day.
5. Saltwater Rinse:
- Make a saltwater rinse by dissolving one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of warm water. Rinse your mouth with this solution several times a day to cleanse and promote healing.
6. Avoid Spicy or Acidic Foods:
- Stay away from spicy, acidic, or crunchy foods that can further irritate the blister. Opt for soft and bland foods that won't worsen the condition.
7. Drink Plenty of Water:
- Staying hydrated is essential for overall healing. Make sure to drink plenty of water to help the blister heal faster.
8. Protect the Blister:
- If possible, try to place a small piece of dental wax or soft gauze over the blister to protect it from further friction or irritation.
9. OTC Oral Numbing Agents:
- There are over-the-counter oral numbing agents available, which can provide some temporary relief from pain and discomfort.
10. Talk to a Doctor:
- If the blister is large, painful, or does not improve within a few days, consult with a healthcare professional. They may recommend additional treatments such as prescription medications or a special mouthwash.
