Ringworm and Birds: Risks, Transmission, and Prevention
Ringworm is a common fungal infection that can be spread through direct contact with an infected person or animal, or by contact with contaminated objects or surfaces. Birds can carry the fungus that causes ringworm, but it is not as common for people to get ringworm from birds as it is from other animals, such as dogs or cats.
If you have any concerns about getting ringworm from a bird, there are a few things you can do to protect yourself:
* Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling a bird or coming into contact with bird droppings.
* Avoid touching your face or eyes with unwashed hands.
* Keep bird cages and other bird-related areas clean and free of debris.
* If you have any cuts or abrasions on your skin, avoid contact with birds or their droppings.
If you do develop symptoms of ringworm, such as a red, itchy rash, see your doctor for diagnosis and treatment. Treatment for ringworm typically involves antifungal medications.
