Chigger Removal: Identification, Treatment & Prevention
Chiggers are small, red mites, the larvae of which feed on blood. Chigger larvae prefer to feast on small rodents and birds, but will not pass up a human meal if they come into contact with you. Chigger larvae do not, as myth would have it, burrow under the skin. Their mouths are small and they prefer the thin skin found in the ankle, crotch and armpit regions. They are easy to remove once discovered. Unfortunately, they will have already bitten you and the bites are painful and maddeningly itchy.Things You'll Need
- Long, protective clothing
- Insect repellent
- Sulfur powder
Instructions
Remove chiggers from your body by taking a warm, soapy bath. They are not attached to the skin in any way and will come off easily. Soak in the bath for a couple of minutes and then wash vigorously with soap.
Use a towel or clean item of clothing to wipe yourself down if you are not at home. Chiggers will drop off with even a light brushing.
Take a hot shower to remove chiggers. Soap yourself well and rub the skin to remove the larvae. Rinse yourself well. Treat bites with topical antiseptic to reduce itching.
